REVIEW: Cube Snake for PC

If you had a Nokia phone in the ’90s, chances are you spent more than a few moments entranced by the game Snake. This simple yet incredibly addictive game offered entertainment well before the days of smartphones. The concept was easy enough: guide an ever-lengthening snake to various targets without colliding with your own tail. Often, simplicity breeds the most engaging gameplay, and that was certainly the case with Snake. Over the years, we’ve seen variations of this classic pop up in the gaming world, each sparking a sense of nostalgia. One such homage is Cube Snake, a PC game that’s currently occupying my gaming hours, the focus of today’s review.

When considering what makes a game appealing, especially a title like Cube Snake, expectations play a crucial role. Your enjoyment can heavily depend on your initial assumptions going in. For Cube Snake, it’s all about embracing simplicity.

Drawing inspiration from its predecessor, Cube Snake has you guiding your snake along the floor and two walls of a cube, collecting snacks that extend your tail. The mechanics remain as straightforward as ever, with the objective being to consume as many snacks as possible before you lose control. Spice up the gameplay with a fever mode, which speeds up the action and throws several targets your way at once—therein lies the challenge, seeing just how far you can go.

This simplicity is precisely what keeps Cube Snake charming. It’s the kind of quick game you dive into for short bursts—perfect for fitting in between tasks. Its easily digestible, fast-paced sessions make it incredibly easy to slip into the “just one more round” mindset, making it a delightful trap for score chasers looking to beat their best.

Now, we live in a gaming era where endless content and unlockable goodies are the norm. If you’re the type who craves an extensive roster of levels or collectibles to gather, Cube Snake might miss the mark for you. Personally, while I love a good score run, having some extra features—like a storyline or unlockable cosmetics—could add more replay value and keep players engaged beyond the high score chase.

Despite this, let me clarify: Cube Snake isn’t a bad game by any means. It’s precisely what it sets out to be—a no-frills, enjoyable experience priced at a mere £2.49. Factoring in the introductory discount, it’s hard to argue that you’re not getting your money’s worth at such a low cost.

In conclusion, for those craving something entertaining and straightforward to pass the time, Cube Snake is a solid choice. It’s a vibrant, fun reimagination of a beloved mobile classic, boasting no bugs and intuitive controls. For gamers who appreciate accessible gameplay that can be briefly picked up or get you hooked for longer sessions, this is an excellent addition to your library. And for those with a fond memory of the original Snake, it’s a nostalgic must-have—great fun all around.

Reintroducing a classic: Cube Snake scores a 7/10. It’s a captivating reinterpretation of a classic, perfect for quick plays and nostalgia-infused score runs. Although it lacks extras like unlockables, it’s a strong rendition that’s well worth the modest price.
