Modder Transforms PlayStation 4 Slim into Portable Handheld Console

Recently, YouTuber Restore Technique unveiled an incredibly detailed 27-minute video showcasing his personal project: transforming a PlayStation 4 into a handheld device. By ingeniously utilizing a custom 3D-printed shell, specially designed circuit boards, a 7-inch display, and the original PS4 Slim motherboard, he successfully crafted a genuine handheld PlayStation 4. This device measures a compact 249 x 156 x 49.2 mm and weighs 1.7 kg. Many enthusiasts might argue that this creation is a far superior follow-up to the PlayStation Vita, especially when compared to the streaming-only PlayStation Portal.

The video provides a comprehensive look into the intricacies of the project. Unlike typical handheld console modifications that often involve less powerful systems like the GameCube or Wii, Restore Technique took on a more ambitious endeavor by adapting hardware akin to modern PCs. The PS4 Slim, with its low-power design, proved ideal for achieving the necessary heat and power management required for a handheld.

With meticulous attention to detail, Restore Technique opted for a PlayStation 4 model that consumes less power and features a more compact PCB. Using top-notch soldering tools, he removed several ports and components, employing a Dremel rotary tool to minimize the aluminum heat spreader size. A custom fan controller was included to manage the cooling, although there are concerns about potential overheating despite these efforts.

Integrated into the handheld is a Dual Shock controller, expertly rewired from various test points to new placements throughout the device. To power this creation, Restore Technique developed a custom 3S2P LiPo 12V 10,000 mAh battery pack, upgraded with a 10 Amp DC power jack to allow simultaneous charging and gaming. DC buck converters were utilized to adjust voltages, ensuring stability for the 12V and 5V rails; the screen runs on the latter and is sensitive to overvoltage.

Although Restore Technique shares some captivating gaming footage, like a run of The Last of Us lasting 86 minutes, this handheld’s high battery demand means it’s best played when connected to a charger. Moreover, its powerful battery setup makes it unsuitable for air travel due to restrictions on high wattage devices.

In his detailed walkthrough, Restore Technique describes how he extracted the PS4 Slim motherboard and designed the innovative “PS4T” shell. The initial prototype was crafted using FDM 3D printing, but the final, more heat-resistant resin version was produced by PCBWay.

Throughout the assembly process, some thermal and power issues led to graphical glitches and slow game performance. However, by refining the controller frames and enhancing internal electric shielding and heat dissipation, Restore Technique achieved stable performance free from visual errors.
