Alright, so check this out. PAX East was buzzing, and not just because of the overload of caffeine — I mean, who else lives on coffee these days, am I right? Anyway, the big noise was from Wizards of the Coast. They decided to mash up Magic: The Gathering with Final Fantasy, and it’s a whole vibe. Like, you could practically hear the screams of joy echoing around the convention center. If you’re into RPGs and card games, this was like… well, Christmas for nerds, no offense. You could even watch the whole chaotic two-hour event online if you felt like it. They peeked into these new packs that had everything from Chocobos (yeah, those big bird things) to land cards that remind you of these epic Final Fantasy scenes.
They’d already shown off some cards back in February, but this little PAX extravaganza went deep — not just showing you the cards but explaining how they’ll dunk on your friends in the game.
Oh, and then — plot twist — Yoshitaka Amano joined the fun. If the name rings a bell, that’s because he’s the iconic artist behind some Final Fantasy magic. He drew Kefka (among others), giving this set some serious art cred.
Now, Magic: The Gathering doing crossovers isn’t new. They’ve got everything from Lord of the Rings to Spongebob — quite the range, huh? This release, though, is set to be a beast — supposedly no one’s even blinking at global economies shuffling around. Hasbro’s boss Chris Cocks dropped this bombshell in April, saying the Final Fantasy set was flying off the shelves faster than anything else in MTG land.
But here’s the kicker. We’re still counting down to release day. Mark June 13 on your calendar if you’re itching to get your hands on these asap. There’s even a preorder option if you’re one of those gotta-have-it type folks.
