Wow, so here’s the deal. You know that thing where Apple and Sony mash things up? Seems it’s picking up speed, or whatever. Apparently, Apple’s Vision Pro, that kinda fancy mixed reality headset—$3,500, ouch!—might soon buddy up with Sony’s PSVR 2 Sense Controllers. It’s been tossed around since late last year, I think. And now folks are talking again, especially 9to5Mac. Like, we might hear some official news next week. No promises, they say, but hey, fingers crossed. And yeah, don’t forget: PlayStation and Xbox gamepads might get some love too. So, like, stay tuned for those nerdisms.
Anyway, this could all drop during the Worldwide Developers Conference. Or it could not! Timing’s a mystery, isn’t it? Apple’s also doing some rebranding with their software – visionOS 26? New names across the board, even for macOS and iOS. It’s like when you decide your summer wardrobe no longer screams you.
Meanwhile, the developers doing their VR thing are in a bit of a pickle. The Vision Pro, which came out, what, February 2024? It’s tricky, requiring hand-tracking and Bluetooth stuff. Think: classic gamepads and type-click-click keyboards. Can they really handle a more touchy-feely, movement-is-key game setup? Some just can’t adapt, I guess. So, introducing these new controllers means more games in the App Store. I mean, game studios might actually say "Hey, why not?"
No delusions here—nobody’s betting farm and barn that adding PSVR 2 controllers will make the Vision Pro the hottest gadget in town. It’s seen more like a “spatial computer,” whatever that means, not the next-gen console for wowza gaming. But still, it might hint that Apple’s warming up to the idea of motion controllers for future, possibly more affordable headsets. Picture a watered-down, more wallet-friendly version down the line.
This whole controller integration stems back to whispers from Mark Gurman over at Bloomberg (he seems to know things, you know?). So, yeah, Apple flirted with Sony around early 2024, looking to play nice with PSVR 2 controllers. Funny, considering Apple was downright dismissive about VR controllers not too long before that. Oh well, never say never, right?
As for me? I’m just here with my popcorn waiting for Apple’s next big reveal, apparently on June 9th. Might stream the keynote on Apple’s YouTube channel. It’s not like I have better things to do on a Monday morning. Or maybe I do. Hard to say.
