Wow, so HP decided to jump on the Google Beam train—this thing used to be ‘Project Starline’ or something—and just throw a whopping $25k price tag on it. Fancy, right? They’re calling it ‘Dimension,’ and it’s like, super futuristic. Those science fiction movies? Yeah, maybe they weren’t too far off.
Anyway, the deal with this Dimension thing is it’s got six cameras and, get this, “state of the art AI” to create this 3D you—right there on a 65-inch light field screen. So, when you’re blabbing away, you look pretty real, with all the depth and colors and, I guess, eye contact. How many times can I say “wow”?
Now, here’s the kicker. They plan to start pushing this out to their VIPs around late 2025. And, yeah, the $25k doesn’t even include the Google Beam license. That’s extra. What a surprise.
For the business folks, this gizmo will play nice with Zoom Rooms and Google Meet. Plus, it mingles with Teams and Webex for those still living in the non-3D world. I mean, sometimes you just want to keep it simple, right?
So, there’s this Helen Sheirbon from HP, big shot over there, saying something about bridging this virtual-physical gap. Whatever that means. Sounds deep—but maybe it’s about making all of us feel less like screen zombies?
This Beam thing (remember when it was all hush-hush as Project Starlight in 2021?) is supposed to show off this 3D without fancy goggles or anything. Like, chat face-to-face without actually being face-to-face.
In some study, HP claims folks noticed 39% more non-verbal stuff and better turn-taking. Oh, and apparently, it boosts memory recall by 28% over regular video calls. As if I remember to remember any percentages…
Is it just me, or is this like having your mind blown and not even knowing exactly how?
