Larian Studios “Deep in Development” on Next Major Game After Baldur’s Gate 3

With the arrival of Baldur’s Gate 3 patch 8, Larian Studios wraps up its journey with this RPG. While we can expect some bug fixes over time, Larian has clearly stated that patch 8 signals the conclusion of new content for this DnD game. This shift means the team is now fully focused on what comes next, tackling two new videogames simultaneously. Although it might be a while before we see these new projects come to life, Larian’s CEO, Swen Vincke, reassures us that development is progressing smoothly.

Currently, the specifics of Larian’s next ventures remain under wraps. They initially considered a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3 but decided to explore uncharted territory instead. Personally, I’m hoping at least one of these new RPGs explores a sci-fi theme. It would be exciting to see Larian apply its rich fantasy storytelling skills in a fresh direction.

Vincke has shared his optimism about the studio’s future projects, hinting that they could be on par with, if not surpass, the scale of BG3.

In a recent chat with GameSpot, Vincke shared, “We’re deep in the trenches working on our next big thing. It’s coming together quite well, but it’s an incredibly ambitious project. There are so many innovations we can explore, making it quite complex.”

Adding to the challenge, he notes, “We’re also figuring out how to manage two games. We’ve been open about this. Organizing everything isn’t easy because our games are intricate, with many player choices and outcomes. Predicting completion dates is tough.”

Despite these challenges, Vincke mentions that Larian isn’t looking to expand too rapidly. Instead, they plan to judiciously allocate their developers across both projects. That said, managing two grand-scale developments isn’t straightforward, so we’ll have to wait to see which game emerges first.
