It seems another game might bite the dust, and this time, it’s PlatinumGames’ mysterious Project G.G. This title, with a vibe reminiscent of Ultra Man, had very little revealed about it and now seems to be edging towards cancellation.
Do you vaguely remember hearing about Project G.G.? I wouldn’t hold it against you if it’s slipped your mind. It was announced back in the distant days of 2020, and then, well, radio silence. Things took a sharper turn when Hideki Kamiya, the game’s director and one of PlatinumGames’ original co-founders, left the company at the tail end of 2023. Naturally, his departure fueled doubts about whether this project would ever come to fruition. If you’re curious, you can visit the games page on the PlatinumGames website, and you’ll notice a list of just 10 titles. This includes heavy hitters like the Bayonetta series, Nier: Automata, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and their latest reveal, Ninja Gaiden 4.
But here’s where it gets interesting. Dive into the Wayback Machine, and you’ll discover that there used to be a whopping 22 games showcased on that page. Among these were licensed titles like Transformers: Devastation, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, and the once-loved The Legend of Korra. They also had in-house projects listed such as Madworld and the unfortunately mishandled Babylon’s Fall—all of which, despite the site update, still retain their individual pages. As for Project G.G., it not only vanished from the games list but also lost its standalone page entirely, with the old URL now leading you straight back to the homepage.
This almost seals the deal that Project G.G. is no longer a prospect, not that it comes as a huge shock. After all, Kamiya’s been gone for over a year. Recently, whispers have hinted at a bit of a talent drain at PlatinumGames, though their announcement of the new Ninja Gaiden seems to suggest the studio is keeping itself afloat—at least for the time being.
